Best time to visit Portugal

The best time to visit Portugal is all year round. However, if you have to choose a period, the months of March, April, May, September, October and November are perfect in terms of time and ease of finding accommodation.

In spring, i.e. from March onwards, the flowers bloom and the almond trees light up the countryside. In autumn, especially in the south, temperatures remain high and the sea water on the Algarve coast still invites you to take a dip.... or perhaps more than one.

If you're looking for sunshine, visit the Alentejo or the Algarve at any time of year, but try to avoid the Alentejo in July and sometimes August when temperatures are very high, in some areas exceeding 40°C.

The constant sunshine makes winter an attractive time to visit the centre of Portugal, while in the south, especially on the coast, it's mild all year round.

In the north, on the other hand, it's very cold, especially inland where snow is common along the mountainous border areas in the Serra da Estrela, Beira-Interior and Trás-os-Montes regions.

The Alentejo is gaining more and more fans all over the world. Until recently, the region was only visited by Portuguese tourists and sporadic German and Dutch caravan visitors.

However, several articles in foreign magazines and a strong advertising campaign have finally put Portugal's largest region on the world tourism map. Firstly, through themed visits such as birdwatching or wine tours, and later in general to sample the divine cuisine, dive into the wild Atlantic of the Alentejo Coast, discover historical sites or explore the Costa Vicentina on foot. Considered the nation's breadbasket, the Alentejo is also the soul of Portugal.

The Alentejo is a region to discover without rushing, paying attention to the details and immensity of the green or golden plains - depending on the time of year - dotted with cork oaks and olive trees.

A visit in spring is advisable to see the region in its splendour, but whatever time of year you visit you should be treated to a sunny day, as this is one of the regions with the most sunny days per year in the whole of Europe.
