When to visit Iceland

It's not the weather that will convince you to visit Iceland. However, the cold weather is not unbearable. Icelandic weather is notoriously unpredictable.

And in summer there are clear, sunny days and temperatures can reach 20°C. However, the good weather is interspersed with rainy and foggy days.

When thinking about the best time to visit Iceland, it's worth bearing in mind that most museums and attractions are only open from the end of May until the beginning of September and this is also when transport is in full swing.

Although almost all of Iceland is south of the Arctic Circle and therefore doesn't experience a true midnight sun, the nights are long from May to early August throughout the country.

In the north, the sun never sets during the month of June, which can cause some confusion at bedtime, but believe me, it's a unique experience.

Between September and March the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can be seen all over the country, but in December the sun doesn't shine until 11am.

In winter, temperatures fluctuate between 7°C and 8°C, although they drop below zero at night. In addition, snow drifts cut through some roads. The best time to visit Iceland is between June and September.

Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in north-east Iceland and is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Dettifoss pours 500 cubic metres of water per second from a height of 45 metres and a width of 100 metres. Dettifoss is situated on the Jkulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in north-east Iceland.

Home to the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull National Park is so vast that it covers around 14 per cent of the country. Other waterfalls in Iceland deserve your attention, such as Seljalandsfoss - probably the most beautiful - Gullfoss, Skógafoss, Goðafoss or Hraunfossar. You'll probably find many more and you can even have your own baptism, as some are only temporary.

Husavik is a small fishing village in the north of Iceland, but it has gained a reputation for being one of the main places for whale watching, such as blue whales or dolphins.

With several life-size skeletons on display, the Husavik Whale Museum has detailed information about the history of whaling in Iceland. The beautiful wooden church of Husavikurkirkja, built in 1907, is also worth a quick visit.

The pseudo-craters, formed by volcanic eruptions and which dominate the landscape, also attract many visitors. The best place to see the craters is near the rural community of Skutustadir.

Few travel experiences in Iceland are more memorable than the sight and sound of an iceberg crashing violently into the sea. The best place to witness this display of nature's power is at the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Located in south-east Iceland, this lagoon was formed by the melting ice of the Breidamerkurjokull glacier.

Located on the Reykjanes peninsula, less than an hour's drive from Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon is Iceland's most popular tourist destination. This artificial lake is fed by seawater heated by a nearby lava flow.

The geothermal waters contain minerals such as silica that are believed to have health benefits, but it's the chance to relax in a steaming lagoon surrounded by black lava rocks that attracts the most visitors.

As well as a restaurant overlooking the Blue Lagoon, the complex has a 35-room resort, spa, saunas, steam baths and a fully equipped fitness room. Alternatively (which I recommend) you can visit other similar lagoons in various parts of Iceland, such as around Myvatn. Some of these lagoons are, in fact, only known to locals.
