When to visit Georgia

Georgia is a year-round destination, although there are some parts of the country that can be impassable for several months, such as Tusheti.

The historic and vibrant capital of Georgia spreads across both banks of the Mtkvari River and is surrounded by hills. Tbilisi is a fascinating city that captivates us, making us stay longer than we initially planned. I stayed there for 45 days.

If I had to choose just one region to visit in the whole of Georgia, it would undoubtedly be Svaneti. Preserved by its long isolation, the Svaneti region in the Caucasus Mountains is an exceptional example of mountainous landscapes with medieval-style villages.

Located in the north-west of Georgia, Svaneti offers stupendous views of gorges, wild rivers and majestic mountains, although to get there you have to travel along steep, narrow roads.

The landscapes are breathtaking, not only because they are magnificent, but also because you need to be physically fit to climb them. Mestia - and other villages like Ushguli - are home to the Svan people, an ethic subgroup of Georgians, with their own dialect and traditions and typical Georgian food. Batumi is a city in search of modernity on the Black Sea coast. It's Georgia's second largest city and one to which thousands of local tourists flock, at least in summer.

The architecture is a combination of European and Asian styles. This is visible at night, when some of the buildings are lit up in vibrant colours. Batumi is a city designed to attract not only tourists, but also gamblers to the various casinos.

Batumi, in the autonomous republic of Adjara, is often called the "Pearl of the Black Sea" and the main reasons for visiting it are gambling, sunbathing and crossing the border into Turkey.

The only monument of Georgian architecture, the stone city of Vardzia is located in Aspindza, the former Samtskhe province of Georgia.

The underground monastery of Vardzia was built in the 12th century, during the reign of "King" Tamar, the first woman to be crowned king in Georgian history. Modern historians refer to Tamar as the "Queen of Kings". Situated on the slopes of the Erusheti Mountains, Vardzia was built in Georgia in the 12th century by villagers seeking refuge from invaders and attacking Mongol troops.

The Georgians sought out hidden cloisters for protection and one of the most impressive they created was Vardzia, which became an incredible refuge and story of self-sufficiency. At its peak, Vardzia stretched for almost half a kilometre, with more than ten levels, thousands of small dwellings, an irrigation system, a church and a throne room for Tamar, the monarch who decreed the construction of the incredible structure. Vardzia is about four hours by car from the capital Tbilisi.

Stepantsminda, known as Kazbegi, is a small town in the north-east of Georgia, close to the border with Russia.

Kazbegi is an incredible travel destination in Georgia. There are plenty of walks through the incredible valleys, but the highlight is the path that takes you to the Gergeti Trinity Church in Stepantsminda, at an altitude of over 2100 metres.

Kazbegi is one of the best places in Georgia for connecting with nature and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, paragliding, mountaineering, horseback riding, photography, or simply to take a deep breath and enjoy the pure mountain air.

Kutaisi is the third most populous city in Georgia, only behind Batumi and Tbilisi. Kutaisi is a city located in the heart of Georgia, boasting beautiful and important monasteries, welcoming people, and an authentic atmosphere.
