When to visit Myanmar

The year is divided into three seasons in Myanmar: The monsoon season begins in mid-May or early June. The dry season begins in November with lower - but still quite high - temperatures.

You'll only feel a chill at night, for example in the Inle Lake area. From February until May, temperatures rise again, reaching 40 °C, especially in Bagan and Mandalay. Rain is generally heaviest in the Yangon region.

Most of the structures operate on the water – including schools, shops, gardens, and agricultural areas. The trademark image is of fishermen rowing with their legs, although some of them are there mainly as tourist attractions. Built on the summit of an extinct volcano, the Buddhist monastery of Taung Kalat, or Mount Popa, is one of the most breathtaking sites in ancient Burma. To reach the top of the monastery, you'll have to fill your lungs with air and get ready to climb the 777 steps, dodging some shopkeepers and lots of monkeys. The view from the top of Taung Kalat is fantastic and you can see a resort hidden amongst the dense vegetation and, in the distance, the city of Bagan.

The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is considered the most sacred Buddhist site in Myanmar. It is said that a strand of Buddha’s hair is enshrined in Shwedagon, and many of the structures are built from gold and over 4,000 diamonds. Numerous temples and statues can be found within this unforgettable temple complex, constructed between the 6th and 10th centuries. Visitors must enter barefoot and are only allowed with conservative clothing — avoid shorts, skirts, and sleeveless tops.

Bagan is where, without a doubt, I witnessed the most fantastic sunrise of all my travels. The sunset is equally incredible, but the hot air balloons, the serenity, the mist, and the cool morning air make waking up in Bagan something magical. And it’s worth repeating the experience several times.

Bagan was the capital of the Burmese Empire between the 9th and 12th centuries. Some of the structures have been damaged by earthquakes in recent years and others by half-hearted repairs by the Myanmar government, but there are still many well-preserved sites. These include the famous Ananda temple with some details covered in gold. It is allegedly these government interventions that have successively delayed Bagan's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
