Until 2010, the Arenal volcano was the most active in Costa Rica, much to the delight of most visitors. Arenal regularly spewed out huge amounts of lava, gas and ash. Until recently, it was the most active volcano in the country, with dozens of small eruptions every day.
Unfortunately, I only visited this part of Costa Rica after the volcano had entered its resting phase. However, the scenic beauty is still intact and this is a must-see when visiting Costa Rica.
At an altitude of 1657 metres, the Arenal Volcano is situated in the fertile plains of northern Costa Rica, and its perfectly symmetrical shape is easily recognisable. With rainforest, waterfalls, a volcano and Costa Rica's largest lake, it's no surprise that the Arenal area has become Costa Rica's adventure capital.

What to see and do in Arenal Volcano National Park
Discover Lake Arenal
Lake Arenal is Costa Rica's largest lake. Situated at the base of the Arenal Volcano in the northern highlands of Costa Rica, it adds even more drama and contrast to this Costa Rican region. The lake is 60 metres deep and covers around 85 km2.
When I visited Lake Arenal, dozens of dead tree roots occupied the bed. Perhaps victims of one or more eruptions of the Arenal Volcano. However, with its surrounding green hills and forests, Lake Arenal is very beautiful. As well as fishing or kayaking, you can also take a sunset cruise with dinner included.
Explore Arenal Volcano National Park
The Arenal Volcano National Park covers 12,000 hectares, but is located within the Arenal Conservation Area, which covers 204,000 hectares, between the Tilarán and Guanacaste mountain ranges. These areas contain great geological and biological wealth.
The park includes the Arenal Volcano and the Chato Volcano, but the latter has been dormant for thousands of years. Arenal has also joined the inactivity, although neither is extinct. In 1968, Arenal wreaked havoc on neighbouring towns, killing dozens of people in Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacón.
The Arenal region plays an important role in Costa Rica's energy production. Lake Arenal, at the base of the Arenal volcano, supplies 12% of the Central American country's hydroelectric power. This is a windy area and this force of nature is not wasted, as there are wind farms right next door.
Tip: If the volcano is covered in clouds, wait 20 or 30 minutes and you might get lucky. At least that's what happened to me, and I've heard similar reports. Because of the wind, the clouds come and go regularly.
Price and opening hours: Entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park costs 15 US dollars for adults and 5 dollars for children. The park opens at 8am and closes at 4pm.
Wildlife watching
When you visit Arenal Volcano National Park, you'll be able to spot several species of animals, as the area is rich in biodiversity. The long list of species includes tapirs, capuchin monkeys, deer, white-faced capuchin monkeys, sloths, toucans, iguanas, snakes, butterflies and various species of birds such as hummingbirds. The flora is no less diverse, with trees and small plants that add colour and brightness to the Arenal landscape.
Diving in the La Fortuna Waterfall
When you visit Arenal, it's almost obligatory to take a dip in La Fortuna Waterfall. Even though it's a "must", I didn't visit it because I opted to visit the Rio Celeste waterfall (which I talk about here in this article).
La Fortuna waterfall is apparently one of the most visited in the country, as it is located just 10 kilometres from the city. The waterfall arises from the force of the waters of the Tenorio River and the verticality of 75 metres into a deep blue lagoon.
So if you're visiting Arenal, take your shorts or bikini, pack a snack and spend an excellent day surrounded by natural beauty. You can also take a horse riding to La Fortuna Waterfall. The route passes through the rainforest and allows you to see a variety of wildlife.
La Fortuna Waterfall is open every day from 7.30am to 4pm. The access ticket costs 18 dollars for adults (5 dollars for children), is bought on the spot, and the proceeds go to support community projects.
Walking at the base of the volcano
It's no surprise that Arenal is one of the favourite places to hike in Costa Rica. You can enjoy a light hike near the base of the volcano, walk through the rainforest and around Lake Arenal. Hiking near a volcano is always an unforgettable experience, as was the case in Guatemala.
A popular route is the Sendero Colada 1968, which is around 2.5 kilometres long, or the Sendero Bosque 1968, which is around 4.5 kilometres long. The Sendero El Ceibo is a trail of around 1 km that ends next to a 50 metre high tree. Shorter is the Sendero Los Tucanes, which covers just 890 metres.
Visit La Fortuna
The Arenal Volcano serves as the backdrop for the small town of La Fortuna. La Fortuna has around 15,000 inhabitants, but hundreds of thousands visit every year.
The town is small and is built around the colourful church. There are only a few streets, but that's where most of the hotels, shops and restaurants are. The town serves as a starting point for travellers looking to experience the plethora of activities available in the Arenal region.
Relax in the hot springs
One of the most popular activities in La Fortuna is to visit the hot springs heated by volcanic waters. On one of the days I was in Arenal I had been hiking through the forest (and had got soaked and muddy to the bone), so I thought I deserved this treat.
The most popular hot spring is Tabacón, which has lush gardens and is completely natural. Baldi Hot Springs is another favourite, as it incorporates several thermal pools and a spa. EcoTermales is another natural hot springs complex, and there are a few others to choose from.
Costa Rica's mineral waters have been used to treat rheumatism and other illnesses. I recommend this experience, although it's not very cheap. But, this tour, for example, includes transport, guide, entrance to the Baldi thermal baths and buffet dinner. There are sources for all budgets.
Practising extreme and water sports
The areas of La Fortuna and Arenal offer a wide range of variety of activities. Arenal is Costa Rica's adventure capital and if you're looking for a shot of adrenaline, this area is ideal. You can abseil, zip line, whitewater rafting and horse riding.
On Lake Arenal you can go windsurfing, fishing, boating or kayaking. Lake Arenal enjoys a great reputation among windsurfers and sailors, as the almost constant wind is a boon.
Extra information
What to take to Arenal Volcano
The Arenal Volcano is a tropical jungle destination, so be prepared for rain and insects. Take waterproof, light and cool clothing. Also add a good pair of walking shoes or trainers, light clothes (to get muddy) and an adventurous spirit.
Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, mosquito repellent, water, binoculars and a camera. You can take some drinks or food if you feel like a mid-day snack.
How many days in Arenal Volcano National Park
I'd say that two nights and three days will be enough to see the Arenal volcano area.
When to visit Arenal Volcano National Park
The Arenal is a tropical rainforest area and rain can come at any time. Temperatures vary between 21 and 27 degrees. The volcano is often covered in clouds, but if you wait a few minutes you may be lucky enough to see the summit, as the wind blows the clouds away as quickly as it blows them in.
From mid-December to April is the dry season, but occasional rains occur at any time. May to November is the "green" season - or "grey" depending on whether you look at the landscape or the sky - when daily afternoon showers are regular. October is the wettest month of the year.

Money in Arenal
Costa Rica's official currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC), but the US dollar is also widely used.
There are banks or ATMs in La Fortuna. If you don't pass through there, I advise you to withdraw colones in San José or another town before travelling to Arenal.
I use the Wise card and the Revolut card to avoid bank fees and commissions. I always travel with both.
How to get to Arenal Volcano National Park
Arenal is conveniently linked to Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, Tortuguero, Tamarindo, Jaco, Playa Herradura and, of course, San José. If you prefer, can fly to La Fortuna airport (FON).
Arenal Volcano National Park is located just 135 kilometres from San José. You can take a public bus to reach Arenal, with several departures throughout the day and a stop in Ciudad Quesada (3h30 journey). On this site you can check the timetables, but you can only buy the tickets on the spot.
Once in La Fortuna, you can walk around the town and then on to the Volcano there are several tours.
Hire a car
If you have your own car, it's much easier. Choose to hire a car with Discovercars. This site allows you to compare prices and, in many cases, you can cancel the rental free of charge up to 48 hours before departure.
The local authorities recommend that you only drive during the day, as the roads are somewhat winding and although Costa Rica is generally a safe country, it's best not to risk it.
Hotel in Arenal Volcano National Park
It was in Arenal that I found the best value for money hotels. There are many options for visiting the Arenal Volcano National Park. La Fortuna and El Castillo de La Fortuna are the most popular options for accommodation.
If you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city, then opt for El Castillo. If you want better hotels (and also with a view of Arenal) there are choices in La Fortuna. If you want to wake up looking at the Arenal Volcano, you can hardly find better than Sangregado Lodge.
If you prefer agro-tourism in the middle of the forest, then Finca Agroforestal Rainforest is the solution. For group trips or large families, the RyA del Volcán flats are great. In El Castillo, the two best options are the Nepenthe B&B and the Essence Arenal and Spa.
If you visit the Tabacon Hot Springs and want to extend your stay by the hot springs, you can also stay there.
Travel Insurance
