The cleanest accommodation in mainland Portugal (and islands)

Health safety and cleanliness are the main concerns for those (re)starting to travel, following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions. I decided to investigate - using the world's largest hotel booking centre (Booking.com) which are the cleanest accommodations in Portugal and help those who want to book a hotel for their next holiday or weekend in Portugal.

Covid-19 has invaded our lives, paralysed the entire world and caused travel chaos. Now that we can travel again, we need to do so safely. In the Booking guests often rate various aspects of a hotel such as comfort, location, value for money and, of course, cleanliness. 

As I mentioned in this article, a hotel or local accommodation that didn't pay enough attention to cleanliness before Covid-19 may not do so now. Or it may be obliged to do so if it wants to receive customers.

However, this list is a kind of award for those who have previously made an effort to keep their spaces clean and sanitised for the safety of all guests. That's why the criteria has been restricted, as I'll explain below.

The regions are listed in alphabetical order and include the Azores, Alentejo, Algarve, Beiras /Centro, Lisbon, Madeira, Minho, Porto and Trás-os-Montes. At the end of the article you'll also find a map of all the cleanest accommodation in Portugal.

Criteria for drawing up the list of cleanest accommodation in Portugal

To compile this list, I researched from the north to the south of Portugal and focussed on the rating given to cleanliness. The data in brackets in the list below indicates the classification given to cleanliness, by all the guests who stayed in each hotel. The grading scale ranges from 0-10, with 10 being the maximum.

In addition, to make this list more reliable, I considered all types of accommodation: hotels, local accommodation, flats, guesthouses, hostels as long as they had received a minimum of 100 opinions on the booking centre website.

I noticed that a large proportion of the places are occupied by small lodgings. Perhaps this is because they have less space and fewer guests to cater for than a hotel with 300 rooms.

Note: No accommodation has had any influence on the drawing up of this list. The selection of hotels follows the criteria defined - among the accommodations that met the criteria mentioned above. This list is a selection, as there are many others that could also appear in this ranking.
