The Algarve is one of the Portuguese's favourite tourist destinations. The Algarve region registers more than 20 million overnight stays per year - both domestic and foreign tourists. Given the variety on offer, it's important to choose well. Based on the reviews in Booking.com, the world's largest booking centre for hotels (and other types of accommodation), I went looking for the 20 best hotels in the Algarve.
Unlike in the past, the Algarve is seeing the emergence of more and more hotels, guesthouses, hostels and even classy rural holiday resorts - many in keeping with their surroundings. Fortunately, developers seem to have learnt their lesson from past mistakes.
The climate, the temperature of the air (and sea water) and the coastal landscapes are some of the factors that contribute to the growth of tourism in this region, but there are many more reasons to visit the Algarve.
Although many visitors stick to the coastal areas of Lagos, Lagoa, Albufeira, Loulé or Tavira, the truth is that there is plenty to discover in the interior of the Algarve. Some of the best hotels in the Algarve are, in fact, on the coast, but there are also excellent hotels in the interior of the Algarve region.
The list of the 20 best hotels in the Algarve shows the name of the hotel, its rating and location. At the end of the article there's also a map so you can easily find a place to stay in the southernmost region of mainland Portugal.
In advance, I can tell you that this compilation includes hotels in fascinating locations such as Carrapateira, Odeceixe, Tavira, Sagres and Monchique, among others. And it's easy to notice the presence of small-scale units. In other words, you can travel to a popular place like Lagos and stay in a quiet, relaxing hotel or flat.
Criteria for drawing up the list of the best hotels in the Algarve
To compile this list, I researched hotels in the Western Algarve (from Sagres to Albufeira) and the Eastern Algarve (from Loulé to Vila Real de Santo António), inland and on the Algarve coast.
The data in brackets in the list below indicates the general classification provided by all the guests who stayed in each hotel. The grading scale ranges from 0-10, with 10 being the maximum. Guests' evaluations include value for money, friendliness and availability of staff, location, comfort and cleanliness.
Furthermore - to make this list more reliable - I considered all types of accommodation: hotels, local accommodation, flats, guesthouses, hostels as long as they had received a minimum of 100 opinions on the booking centre website.
