Costa Rica has announced that it surpassed the 300-day barrier in 2017 when operating solely on renewable energy sources. According to a report by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, the figure was achieved using hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, solar and biomass energy.
In 2015, Costa Rica had already managed to generate 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources for 299 days.
Last year, the small Central American nation also achieved the highest wind energy production since records began, with 1288 gigawatt hours (gwh/h). In 2006, the energy produced by wind power didn't even reach 300 gwh/h.
At a time when the main nations are discussing strategies to combat the greenhouse effect and climate change, Costa Rica is setting an example of what can and should be done.
