In this article I've put together all the information you need: how to get to Tavira's beaches, what kind of facilities there are at each one, as well as timetables, prices and where to park. This way, you can get to the best beaches in the eastern Algarve without any stress.

Tavira Island Beach
I visited Praia da Ilha de Tavira when it wasn't yet on the tourist trail, when even Spanish holidaymakers hadn't put it on their radar. Since then, I've been there several times and returned again in 2020 to see it as I'd never seen it before - practically deserted, with no people, but as fantastic as ever. It's undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Tavira.
The island is 11 kilometres long and includes Praia de Tavira, the Praia da Terra Estreita, the Praia do Barril and the Praia do Homem Nu.

There are no cliffs here, no rocks and, if you walk a little to the right or left, there won't be many people around either. What there is is a fantastic place to spend a day or several days, a clean sandy beach and a vibrantly coloured sea as far as the eye can see.
Can you imagine the sun setting here with a cold beer in your hand?
Good to know...
Praia de Tavira has a campsite, several restaurants with fresh fish and toilets next to the campsite (which were clean when I visited), a supermarket and a small picnic area. Part of the beach is guarded during the bathing season.
How to get to Praia da Ilha de Tavira
You can get to Tavira Island by boat from the Quatro Águas pier or from the Tavira waterfront in the city centre (Rua Dr. José Pires Padinha).
There isn't always parking close to the town centre, so if you have a car it's best to board at the Quatro Águas pier - about 2 km from the centre. There is a large paid car park there.

Cabanas Beach
Of the beaches on this list, Praia de Cabanas is the only one not on the island of Tavira, but on the island of Cabanas. The origins of Cabanas go back to tuna fishing and it is still predominantly a fishing village.
Cabanas Island is a small patch of sand that stretches as far as the Cacela bar. After crossing the Ria Formosa, you'll arrive at a narrow but stunning beach. Seventy metres wide and seven kilometres long, it's the ideal option for those looking for uncrowded beaches.
Cabanas de Tavira was once a quieter place, but many now travel to this area in the summer to enjoy the gastronomy and the secluded beach. It is also popular with those who practise sports such as sailing or windsurfing.
Praia de Cabanas is not only one of the best beaches in Tavira, but also the best in the Iberian Peninsula. At least that's what the readers of the British newspaper The Guardian thought.
Good to know...
Praia de Cabanas has awnings, sunbeds, restaurants, toilets, showers and surveillance during the bathing season.
How to get to Cabanas Beach
At the time of writing, there is a public petition to build a pedestrian bridge to Praia de Cabanas. Until that happens (if it ever does), to get to Praia da Ilha de Cabanas you have to take a fisherman's boat, which takes about five minutes. The boats leave from the town of Cabanas.
In some accommodations, such as the Pedras Da Rainha resort, the crossing is included in the price of the overnight stay.

Barril Beach
Along with Praia da Ilha de Tavira, Praia do Barril is one of the most popular beaches in this region of the Algarve. In fact, this beach is also on the island of Tavira, but between the island's main beach and Barril it's several kilometres away.
This is a beach with a magnificent stretch of sand as far as the eye can see and calm, warm waters. The beach is very popular with couples and families, as it is the most accessible beach in Tavira.
If you stand in Barril facing the sea and decide to walk to the left (west) you'll find Praia da Terra Estreita and even further away the main beach of Tavira Island. If you walk to the right (east), you'll find Praia do Homem Nu.
It is also possible to take a nature trail - the Barril Trail - which highlights the environmental richness of the Ria Formosa. Praia do Barril has been awarded the Blue Flag since 1987.
Good to know...
Praia do Barril is well-equipped, as the old tuna fishing frame has been converted into a beach centre. There are toilets on the beach (very clean when I had to use them) and lifeguards during the bathing season.
There are also shops and restaurants in Barril, but be prepared for inflated prices. For example, an ice cream (corneto) with a list price of €1.50 is sold there for €2.50. Be warned...
How to get to Praia do Barril
To get to Praia do Barril, park next to the Pedras D'El Rei holiday village. There is free parking along the road between Barril and St Lucia (which fills up quickly). There is also a private pay car park. It used to be a free car park, but now you have to pay if you want to park.
Then cross the narrow bridge over the Ria Formosa. After the bridge you have two options: either walk for 1.5 kilometres or buy a ticket and take the train to Praia do Barril. The line was built to serve the old tuna fishing grounds.
Transport operates daily in the summer from 8.45am until around 8.00pm. The rest of the year it operates intermittently and depends on the flow of tourists. The ticket price is €1.60 each way. The journey takes around five minutes.
Terra Estreita Beach
I visited Praia da Terra Estreita (Santa Luzia Beach) for the first time in 2020 and it's a delight. It's a tongue of fine white sand - just 250 metres wide - that's part of the island of Tavira.
There, like Barril, the calm sea, the quiet sand and the crystal-clear waters are equally appealing.
Good to know...
There is a large concession at Praia da Terra Estreita with sun loungers and parasols (from €7), a restaurant and toilets. The entire structure on the beach is erected at the start of the bathing season and dismantled in the autumn.
How to get to Terra Estreita Beach
Terra Estreita beach can only be reached by ferry from Santa Luzia pier. The ferry ticket to Terra Estreita costs €1.50 (one way) or €2 (return).
The timetables vary according to the time of year. At the beginning of June and after the 6th of September, the boats leave from 9am and run at 30-minute intervals. From the second fortnight of June and until the first week of September, there are boats from 8.30am and every 15 minutes.
In the first two weeks of October there are only departures from 10am with even more widely spaced intervals. There are no boats sailing to Terra Estreita after 15 October and until June of the following year.
There are also water taxis (more expensive) during the low season and in case of missed boarding at any time.
Naked Man Beach
The name gives you a clue as to what kind of beach this is. But the name came about after a shipwreck in which only one crew member survived, having arrived at the seafront without any clothes on.
Praia do Homem Nu stretches for 4 kilometres to Praia da Barra Nova in Fuseta. This beach is classified as an official naturist beach. In fact, it was the first to be officially recognised in this sector - although it is the least visited of Tavira's beaches.
Good to know...
This beach is not equipped with any support facilities, nor does it have lifeguard surveillance, so it is advisable to take some food, water, sun cream and a sun hat.
How to get to Naked Man Beach
There is no regular transport to Praia do Homem Nu. Access to this naturist beach is via Praia do Barril. After (finding a place to) park, cross the bridge over the estuary, walk to Barril and when you reach the sandy beach go to the right-hand side.
The other option for getting to Praia do Homem Nu is to take your own boat or a private boat from Fuseta - which is not cheap (from €10). But try to negotiate the price on the spot.

Hotels in Tavira
Tavira is a great town and there are some excellent hotels. Of the many, I would recommend four that are situated in fantastic locations: from the countryside to the seafront of Santa Luzia.
O Fort of São João da BarraIn Cabanas, you'll enjoy a marvellous location and spend the night in a magical place.
If you prefer the city centre, then the Pousada do Convento da Graça is the ideal solution. Not only is it a historic building, but it's also just a stone's throw from the castle and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
If you want to sleep lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea and the Ria Formosa, then Vila Galé Albacora is certainly the option for you. It's in an irresistible location.
If you choose to stay "in the countryside", but very close to the sea, then my option would be the Villa Lobos:
